Now Available: “American Getaway” Podcast

American Getaway: The Very True, Very Strange Story of Camp Wandawega, is a six-part audio series available to stream and download on Spotify and Apple Podcast. This limited series tells the stranger-than-fiction story of an infamous lakeside property in southeastern Wisconsin that was once a brothel and speakeasy before later transforming into a family resort, a Catholic retreat center, and a summer camp. Today, the property is owned and operated by a Chicago couple, David Hernandez and Tereasa Surrat, and is listed on the Wisconsin Register of Historic Places.  Brothel, speakeasy, hideout, refuge, summer camp.  For the past 100 years,…

Wandawega Dining Hall

The Wandawega Dining Hall that served its last meal over 60 years ago reopens its doors. This little spot is coming back to life with the local best as well as star chefs from Chicago and beyond. From 1925-1961, Wandawega Lake Resort served 3 meals a day in the dining hall of our original main lodge for guests. When we bought camp, we found all the original tables, chairs, and hoards of serverware from its restaurant days. It’s taken us 17 years of dreaming of bringing it back so we’re so excited to read about its re-opening in the new…

SIPPL’S MAPLE SYRUP…custom canned for Camp!

It’s here! Our Camp Wandawega Maple Syrup, from the sugar maples of Wisconsin, (canned just a few hours north of camp at a family owned sugar bush in Burnamwood, Wisconsin pop. 800). Finding these original lithographed cans was fun! The design dates back to 1951 (when canning syrup was a new method)… some of our design inspiration shown below. In an effort to promote it to farmers, Quebec’s Ministry of Agriculture held a province-wide call for packaging designs. This winning entry went into production and has been lithographed ever since. Production today is streamlined with state-of-the-art tubing systems, jars, bottles…

Metro Van Shop

THE TINIEST STOREFRONT. Asking our little camp delivery truck to pull double-duty. She’s decided that after nearly 70 years of loyal service delivering everything from bread to car parts, she now wants to be a Camp Canteen (so we spent the weekend stocking her with all of our favorite souvenir-y things) But we still need 5 more items before she can open her doors for y’all – to complete her ‘teensiest store’ inventory alphabet. Anybody have ideas that start with QUXYZ??? They can be little to fit in the antique vending machines or as as tall as 6’ – her…

Muk Luks x Wandawega

Wandawega MUK LUKS Camp socks, from Wisco. We’ve been working on this forever & never thought we’d get this excited about socks. It started with finding a vintage pair & our inability to find the same retro patterns anywhere – then tracing them back to their birthplace. (Of course, we mean the birthplace of the 20th century brand, not the birthplace of the original boots they were inspired by. That original birthplace would be somewhere in the Arctic, courtesy of the wonderful Inuit, Iñupiat, or Yupik peoples. But you know what we mean : ) So began an obsession that…

Company Retreats

Remember:What happens at camp…rarely stays at camp. We’ve hosted some corporate retreats here – some of them we’re not allowed to mention – but over the years we’ve found one common denominator:It’s always the ones you least suspectwho step up and go all Katniss on us at the archery range. It’s the unassuming guy who just announced his retirement who shows up with a new beard and a well-worn axe to split wood like Grizzly Adams. Never underestimate that introverted guy in IT’s ability to nail the hatchet bullseye first. Then there’s always at least one unsuspecting nice girl who’s…
