Fancy Movie Folks Have Camp Weddings Too!

Pardon me if I’m getting dangerously close to “Celebrities: They’re Just Like Us!” territory, but I saw on the morning news that Matthew McConaughey recently got married and he and his bride did it up camp-style. There were games set up all over their “yard” in Austin, TX, hammocks were hung from trees for relaxing and 47 luxury tents were used for sleeping. The tents were decked out with beds, white fur rugs and outdoor seating with doormats.  While Googling this fancy schmancy camp wedding, I saw that Matthew (in addition to appearing shirtless on camera more often than not) had a vintage…

4 Million Dollars Will Get You Your Very Own Camp!

I mentioned this in my counselor intro, but I have to reiterate: Camp Wildwood is for sale in Topanga Canyon, CA!  And has been since late 2011.This camp needs LOVE!  Even its sign is begging for a hug…or at the very least a couple of nails for cry eye!  Honestly, I don’t know that much about Camp Wildwood, but I check often to make sure it’s still available even though I could never EVER afford it. I first saw the camp listed for upwards of 6 million bucks, but now the price has dropped to just under 4 million, so gather your…

Check out Relique! It’s a tad pricey, but you can find some deals, as I did on Fab.com. Read about them below and check out some of their very cool finds. Are Those Cabins? Olson Kundig Architects

Stumbled on these this morning.  These cabins are insane!   They’re industrial and woodsy and thoughtful and everything you want from a modern cabin.  Check out the firm’s culture and philosophy.  I love everything about them! Delta Shelter CHICKEN POINT CABIN The idea for the cabin is that of a lakeside shelter in the woods—a little box with a big window that opens to the surrounding landscape. The cabin’s big window-wall (30 feet by 20 feet) opens the entire living space to the forest and lake. Materials are low maintenance—concrete block, steel, concrete floors and plywood—in keeping with the notion of a…

Dee Duncan: Camp Illustrator

Hipster meets vintage meets camp by Dee Duncan.  Raised in Kansas, based in Chicago, Dee rides a fixie, works on cars, runs marathons and creates some of the wittiest art ever!  I worked with Dee for a couple of years and he was always, ALWAYS coming up with another art project.  I’m also lucky enough to have been the recipient of a few pieces that live in my living room.  He doesn’t focus solely on camp, but when he does, it’s fab.  Thanks Dee for being a great inspiration and for always making things interesting. Dee created and this photo of himself and his…

I Am Camp

I went to an all-girls camp called, believe it or not, Campo Fiesta.  All the counselors had “Spanish” names like Patita, Paco and…Nacho….sadtrombone.com There are 200+ of us on Facebook who post pictures on the Campo Fiesta page all the time. Please enjoy. Camp girls in the 1950s.  Did they really do their hair at camp?  Come on, ladies.  It’s camp. Archery! Canoeing and skiing with now-deemed-unsafe flotation “belts.” Campo Fiesta in the 60s looks a little more funky.  Diggin’ those shades. The author around 1977 (second row from top on the left).  This was not my best look, but…

Where the Blazed Trail Crosses the Boulevard: Abercrombie and Fitch Was Cool

My parents went on not one but TWO African safaris in the 1960s and my dad was a huge hunter and fisherman. As a result, I remember when Abercrombie & Fitch was a really cool hunting and fishing outfitter. If you are reading this blog, you probably already know that Abercrombie & Fitch, the “sexy tween” clothing chain, was once a sportsman’s wonderland that sold camping, hunting and adventure gear to the likes of Ernest Hemingway and Amelia Earhart. But if you didn’t know, this, you are in for a treat! Whenever my 85 year old mom and I pass an…
