The best story-teller we know…

…Is Michael Kiser. The dude has a gift. Check out this excerpt from his latest ‘collaboration post’ on Ronan Anderson’s visit here to camp: “Enter the fire department. A bit lost in conversation, and a bit heady from the brews, none of us noticed the bit of smoke rolling off the steaks and into the lodge. A few failed attempts at entering the cancel code and we had guests. Hungry guests. In his apologies for tying up some of Elkhorn, Wisconsin’s finest, Rohan passed around a few plates and made some new friends. They returned from their trucks with beef jerky and…

Holiday Craft Camp Recap

The weekend after Thanksgiving, we hosted a small group of women at Camp for a craft weekend. It was a chance for everyone to get away from the city for two days and two nights to make new friends, learn a few crafts, exchange holiday cookies, eat some great food and RELAX. Emily Berman, a good friend of Camp, prepared a weekend-long menu of great cold-weather foods, while I (Hillary) planned and led all the crafts. It was a great time and we hope to get back soon for more crafty fun. Here are some of the details and activities…

BUCKSHOT SONNY’S + GOOD BEER HUNTING dudes weekend

We highlighted Michael Kiser of Good Beer Hunting yesterday on the blog. It was timely because two weekends ago he teamed up with Max Wastler of Buckshot Sonny’s to throw an all-guys, manly-man weekend at Camp Wandawega.  Here are some quick highlights but you should really check out the full story of beer, booze, debauchery and style over at Good Beer Hunting. There are many beautiful photos of what seems to have been a legendary weekend. Max of Buckshot Sonny’s Goods mans the grill (check out the hog head behind him). No guys weekend would be complete without a bonfire (or flaming nunchucks)… …OR good whiskey. Blake…

GOOD BEER HUNTING. wow.

Say hello again to Michael Kiser of Good Beer Hunting, the definition of renaissance man. We have never met a more prolific, talented dude. He and his lovely and equally talented wife Hillary are friends of Wandawega and guest bloggers. We can’t possibly describe all of the things he does and makes…so in his own words: I’ve always been a storyteller, whether with words or images, so when I started obsessing over craft beer some years back, telling the larger story of the people and places behind it seemed like the natural thing to do. I grew up working in restaurants and factories,…

Dinner down on the farm

Nothing feels more like home than a dinner on the farm. I’ve recently had good fortune of meeting the Lubbers who have a family farm outside Grand Rapids, Michigan. This 120 acres is devoted to dairy, bread making and a variety of self-sustaining produce. Most recently they’ve started making their own cheese, operating the small business as an internal start-up on the farm. Sitting across from Karen and Jeff Lubber at a dinner with Brewery Vivant’s brewers and chefs in the loft of their barn, it was clear that their passion for food was directly tied to the expanding American palate….

Cooking at Camp

When I think of camp, one of the first things I think about is packing snacks and treats. Camp is a great excuse to return my childhood days of string cheese, hot dogs, gummy worms and ice cream sandwiches. But I’ve gained some wisdom in my later years. While those candies and snacks are fun and easy, they’re missing out of the fun of actually making the food. My trips to camp now hinge on local farmers markets and delis, acting as fresh food outposts before we head far away from town and into the country. Whether these places are…

Sojourn, a Store

We spent the weekend bouncing around antique and vintage shops in SW Michigan, including Three Oaks, Buchanan and Sawyer — and one store stole our hearts with it’s perfectly balanced mix of smart finds and handmade designer goods: Sojourn. Located just in from the shore along Red Arrow Highway in Sawyer, Sojourn is the realized dream of Stacia Garriott Kass: Sojourn began over ten years ago when my husband and I took a day trip from Chicago to the west coast of Michigan. We loved the roadside restaurants, the charming antique stores, and the friendly people we found in Harbor…
