Forgotten Chicago- Snappy Service Station restaurant.

I drive by this everyday.A few weeks ago we noticed that the facade had been stripped, revealing a gorgeous 1930’s enamel- tiled original front. And a beaming sign that readsSNAPPY SERVICE SYSTEM5¢.A little google digging reveals:Forgotten Chicago research department went to the Newberry Library to go through Chicago white and yellow pages from 1925 to 1959, looking for “Snappy Service System” restaurant locations. The Snappy Service System restaurant recently revealed at 1141 North Ashland was curiously not listed in any of the phone books examined.  Following are the Snappy Service Systems restaurants listed from 1934 (the first time these…

scofflaw

I am so happy that Scofflaw came to town. It is quickly becoming one of the best cozy gems in the city. The atmosphere is dark, warm and lodge-like with a twist of modern through the accents of wallpaper and lighting. Scofflaw has great food and great drinks. I love how simple and straight forward the menu is. There are only a handful of items, but what I have tried has been delicious! The drinks, for you adults, are outstanding as well and they even make their own Gin, called Old Tom Gin, that is in a beautifully designed bottle….

Grandpa’s old military photos

My grandfather passed away a few weeks ago. It was sad and hard on our family (especially my grandmother), but he was 93 and lived a long, happy and simple life. He was a strong and caring grandfather, father and husband. He will be missed dearly. A few years back, he and my grandmother moved into an assisted living facility. When they moved, all of us grandchildren were encouraged to go through their home and take things that we wanted (the things that they weren’t moving with them). It sounds a little morbid but it was cool to go through…

Crain’s Chicago new Style Profile series

Crain’s Chicago business has a new feature series: Style Profiles of Chicago Business folks. It’s the brainchild of Jan Parr (former editor in chief of Chicago Home and Garden and current exec editor at Crains) When she asked me if I wanted to talk about my style, I thought she was kidding.I could have given her a dozen better more stylish options. (bascially, every girl I work with at the office)  I couldn’t fathom that readers would want to know the reality of where my clothes really come from:yardsales. thriftstores. flea markets. (and a few scary places I won’t even admit to…

Camp Pendalouan maps: then + now

I love maps of summer camps. There’s such a sense of wonder and discovery at a camp, so their maps end up feeling more like treasure maps than regular road maps. Actually, maybe a treasure map is a bad analogy since it’s not really about showing you how to get somewhere so much as it’s about showing you where you are once you’ve already stumbled upon somewhere. It’s fun to be able to compare old maps to new ones. I love to see how the illustration styles have changed and it’s interesting to look at how a camp’s layout evolves…

Vintage cookout

The seasons are turning and it’s getting a bit cold for cookouts here in the Midwest. I guess it’s goodbye to summer and hello to fall! [image via the Cats and the Berries; I can’t find the original source image–when I searched, Google Images suggested vintage cookout items on Etsy]
